Official Google Base Blog: New Policies for Marketplaces & Aggregators on Google Product Search

New Policies for Marketplaces & Aggregators on Google Product Search

Wednesday, September 02, 2009 at 3:58 PM

Today we’re happy to introduce multi-client accounts as a solution to help aggregators and marketplaces manage feeds for multiple sellers under a single account. By allowing marketplaces better control over their sellers’ product data, shoppers get more accurate and relevant information when they search for things to buy on Product Search, and individual sellers don’t need to submit their own feeds. The multi-client accounts allow aggregators and marketplaces to consolidate and manage data feeds and reporting for sub-accounts, submit changes more rapidly, and get more accurate Google Checkout badging at the seller level. Marketplaces and aggregators will be required to use multi-client accounts to submit and manage their sellers’ feeds starting on December 1st, 2009.

This is great news for users of our service and will allow us to better target our feed to the specific customer.

New Computer Recomendations and Best Practices

Buy a Mac

This is mega kick ass hardware and highly dependable software. The only reason not to buy a Mac is cost. I have not found a single Windows app I can’t run on my Mac with a little help from VM-Ware. Is a Mac perfect? No but is a lot closer to computing nirvana than any PC I have ever used.

If you can’t buy a Mac buy a PC With

  • Processor: Intel multi-core 64 bit processor
  • Memory: At least 4 Gb of RAM
  • Hard Disk: at least 300 Gb or as much as you can afford.
  • DVD: DVD-RW drive
  • Monitor: At least 19” with DVI connections.

Operating System

Windows XP or Windows 7 – 64 Bit

Best Practices

Security – What You Need

1. Our current basic security software recommendation is Norton Anti-Virus. Don’t buy Norton System Works or Internet security suites because they have a LOT of stuff you don’t need. These unnecessary programs only rob you of valuable system resources.

2. Windows XP Service Pack III and all current security updates. http://update.microsoft.com

3. If your computer is connected to the internet though a cable or DSL modem, you need to have a software firewall. The good news is that a firewall with minimal security is included in Windows XP and is ok for most situations.

What Will Kill You!

Anything that says it is free will ruin your life! There is no such thing as free software you may not give them money, but you just gave away your computer and it contents.

Examples include but are not limited to the following:

  • Anything that says it will optimize your internet connection, remove adware, or increase your PC’s performance in any way.
  • Weather Bug – a good rule of thumb is to never install anything with the word bug in it on your computer.
  • Precision Time
  • Internet file sharing applications such as Limewire. I recommend the new Windows Media Player or iTunes. These are pay sites but they are inexpensive and well worth the money.
  • Free Screen Savers
  • Create a Monster (Hello!)
  • My Daily Horoscope
  • Anything that asks if your computer is running slow
  • Anything that says free that does not come from a name you know
  • Anything that says it will pay you to surf or offers rebates or coupons for anything such as Bargain Buddy
  • With a few exceptions (FireFox), any alternate web browsers or E-mail programs. (contact your systems administrator)
  • Do not download any toolbars or search assistants except for Google, Yahoo, or Bing. All of these have a built in pop-up blocker and some of them have a anti-spyware program that does no harm.

Safer Searching

Google — is now presenting people with a warning before they visit websites that have been reported to StopBadware.org as sites that distribute badware. These warnings currently link to a general page on StopBadware.org, but as sites are researched they will replace the general page with an individual website reports (see an example here ). Hopefully this next step will bring us that much closer to fulfilling the mission of providing people with reliable, objective information about downloadable applications in order to help them make better choices.

What you can do:

  • Listed in the If you want to play games, chat or other things go to Yahoo first. Yahoo Instant messenger their chat services and other services are all-good and have no bad habits (yet).
  • If you have a question about any software contact your systems administrator before you install it.
  • Desktop search utilities from Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft are an excellent way to keep track of documents on YOUR computer. I highly recommend them.

Kenny vs. the MAC

I can’t stands it no mo! My lowly Dell Inspiron is dying a slow painful death! It was an inexpensive computer I only paid about $900.00 for it. I have had it for just over a year. I have been using Microsoft products almost exclusively for over 25 years. The news is I am replacing it with a MAC PowerBook Pro.

Last week I bought an iPhone. For the past two years I have been using a Palm Treo 750. I purchased it just before Search Engine Strategies San Jose 2007. My phone had died and I had to replace it now. At the conference Marisa Myer of Google while delivering her keynote address demonstrated her iPhone prototype and I felt sick! I knew that I had missed out but the Palm 750 at the time was an expensive state of the art phone and I am cheap. So last week when the iPhone 3 GS came out I was in line at AT&T at 7:00 am to get my new, state of the art, 32 GB iPhone 3 GS and found eternal bliss. Until I started to sink my music collection. It took forever because my laptop kept crashing. No fault of iTunes.

The problem was not with the iPhone it was with my flaming piece of S**t laptop! For a few weeks now my computer has been doing strange things. The cursor has been tripping and when I play anything Flash my computer craps out. No blue screen of death. No recovery information at all except a cryptic message referring to the Dell wireless drive which turned out to be BS. If this was a customer computer I would have backed it up zapped it and gone on with my life. But no! This is my computer and I am going to figure it out. After probably 20 hours of virus scans, hardware scans, software reinstalls etc. I found that it crashed slower at low temperatures. So its hardware! Fan is working computer just dying!

So the other night I was working along and WHAM! Dies at a most inopportune time and the second the computer came back up I did a rash thing! I went to Apple.com and bought a 15” PowerBook Pro.

This is the first MAC I have owned since the 80s. I don’t know how this is going to work out but I have had it with cheap computers and most things Microsoft.

In the last year I have moved almost all of my internet work off of Windows platforms. I have one server with a couple of sites that are not producing and complicated to move and that is it! In the last year, I have moved all ecommerce to Magento Commerce on Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP, (LAMP) servers hosted at Simple Helix. I am now using WordPress for all of our professionally managed blogs.

On the Mobile and Server fronts I have pretty much moved completely away from Microsoft products. I have only installed two Windows Servers this year and we are looking into replacing future server hardware with cloud computing. We stopped selling Microsoft Exchange Server the day Google Apps for Domains came out. We have now run our biggest customers email systems on Google Apps for over a year and they are thrilled with not only the cost but the features and performance.

So the last step is the Desktop!

Stay tuned to see if:

· Kenny kills himself publicly!

· Kenny totally sells out to the Devils operating systems OSX.

· Kenny spends himself into oblivion making it all work!

Update: Guess What…I’m out of JAIL!

Kenneth in jail!

That’s right I am going went to the slammer, and I am being charged with –being a hero. Thank all of you for your generous donations. If you have not had time you can still donate to this worth cause at the link below!

See, I signed up for this year’s Muscular Dystrophy Association’s Lock Up.

That’s because MDA helps kids with Muscular Dystrophy get what they need to be mobile, to be active… to be kids. They also provide a wide range of services to Moms and Dads to help them better cope with the challenges of raising a special kid.

I have personally seen the good these guys do and so I am asking my friends to help.

If I can get just 32 friends to donate $25 then we can send a kid to camp this year. At MDA Camp kids get to learn all kinds of skills to help them lead more productive, normal lives…and they have a great time doing it.

So let’s do this! Make a donation today at my MDA Kenny’s Going to Jail MDA Homepage.

Vanda And Rod of SupportHoseStore.com meet With Googlers at the Googleplex in June 2008

By Keran Krane

Google Reaches Out to Small Business In this ever changing hi-tech world many small businesses get left in the dust. But Google has built much of their success on reaching out to the little guy. With tools such as AdWords, AdSense, Wiki’s, and the ever-evolving slew of beta programs-Google is equipping small business owners with the tools they need to stay competitive.

I recently talked with Rod and Vanda Lancour of Support Hose Store about how they utilize Google services to increase their business. Rod and Vanda run a small, internet-based business that sells medical support hose and stockings. They have been working with Google for years to keep their website competitive- and it’s working; The Support Hose Store is consistently at the top of Google searches for their keywords. Is Someone Stealing you Wireless?

Is Your Neighbor Stealing Your Wi-Fi?

If loading a web page or downloading an MP3 and suddenly your network is moving at a glacial pace, your next door neighbor may be using up your bandwidth. To be sure, you can check your router’s logs (accessible through your router’s Wi-Fi manager software) to see what other computers are linked up to your network.

The most popular to prevent intruders from accessing your network is to enable WEP encryption on your network. However this is not a secure technology anymore. Hackers can eaisily break a WEP key in just a few minutes!

The best way or WPA encryption on your network basicly setting up a password using your router’s software. Don’t lose this password, as you’ll need it to connect any additional computers or devices you want on your Wi-Fi network.
